“Transparent Structures providing Komorebi Naturalness“
Wednesday, March 19th, 6:00p.m. est
Online Lecture
Jun Sato Structural Engineers Co., Ltd. is a Tokyo-based structural engineering firm recognized for its innovative approach to lightweight and experimental structures. The firm collaborates with architects, researchers, and material scientists to explore new possibilities in structural design, often integrating unconventional materials and fabrication techniques. With a focus on structural efficiency and material optimization, Jun Sato and his team embrace experimentation to shape both space and form. Their projects range from small-scale pavilions to complex architectural structures.
Founder and principal Jun Sato is a structural engineer and professor at the University of Tokyo. He holds a Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Tokyo and has collaborated with leading architects such as Kengo Kuma, Junya Ishigami, and Sou Fujimoto. His work bridges academic research and built projects, emphasizing material efficiency, computational design, and structural experimentation. His expertise in ultra-lightweight structures and reinforcement methods has significantly influenced contemporary structural engineering.
Through collaborations with architects, workshops with students, and research in his laboratory, Sato develops lightweight, ductile, and transparent or translucent structures that act as environmental filters. Notable collaborations include Extreme Nature for the 2008 Venice Biennale and Balloon with Junya Ishigami; House NA and Naoshima Pavilion with Sou Fujimoto; Sunny Hills Japan with Kengo Kuma; and a glass structures seminar and workshop at Stanford University. Sato previously worked at Toshihiko Kimura’s office (1995–1999), received the Japan Structural Design Award in 2009, and earned his Doctor of Engineering degree from the University of Tokyo in 2013.
We look forward to seeing you at this lecture.
