James Wines is the Founder of the Environmental Art and Architecture Studio, SITE. Wines is a graduate of the Syracuse University School of Art (1955) and former director of environmental design at Parsons School of Design, and professor emeritus of architecture at Penn State University. Known for his site-specific designs, he has completed over 150 project including buildings, public spaces, landscapes, and environmental art works for private and municipal clients internationally and authored seven books, including On Site-On Energy, De-Architecture, and Green Architecture.

Wines received the Smithsonian Institution’s National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2013, the ANCE Annual Award for International Architect in Italy in 2011, and the Chrysler Award for Design Innovation in 1995. In 2019, he was recognized with the Artist X Artist Award from the Hirshhorn Museum. He has also been awarded numerous fellowships and grants from prestigious organizations, including the National Endowment for the Arts, Kress Foundation, American Academy in Rome, Guggenheim Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Graham Foundation, and Ford Foundation.

SITE is an architecture and environmental arts studio founded in New York City in 1970. It is internationally known for its imaginative, environmentally responsible, and visually memorable designs for buildings, public spaces, and products across 14 countries. SITE’s team emphasizes sustainable architecture that integrates social, psychological, ecological, and contextual considerations, aiming to communicate with the public and reflect evolving sociopolitical and ecological needs. Since the 1990s, SITE has advanced a broader vision of green design, seeking proposals beyond industrial-age influences to address the demands of the 21st-century information and ecological landscape.
