Rensselaer School of Architecture continues its Spring 2024 Lecture Series this Wednesday, March 13th, 5:00 pm, at EMPAC with the lecture “Rethinking Materiality” by Anupama Kundoo.
Anupama Kundoo’s architectural practice centers on addressing fundamental human needs of purpose, social engagement, and utility. Her experimental approach is marked by a commitment to human-centric and socioeconomic advancement achieved through thorough research and exploration of materials and building techniques. Kundoo recognizes the process of design as a one-to-one scale in all aspects with real scale, real materials, real people, and real life.
Kundoo obtained her architectural degree from the University of Mumbai in 1989, commencing research in Auroville the following years with a focus on energy and water-efficient infrastructure. In 2008, she pursued a doctoral degree at the Technical University of Berlin. Leveraging her education and principles, she has taught at various institutions, including the Technical University in Berlin and Darmstadt in Hesse, Parsons The New School for Design in New York, the University of Queensland in Australia, and the European School of Architecture and Technology in Madrid. She is currently a Professor at the Potsdam School of Architecture, Germany. She is the recipient of the 2021 RIBA Charles Jencks Award, the 2021 Auguste Perret Prize, and the 2021 Building Sense Now global award of the German Sustainable Building Council. Her studios are based in Berlin, Germany, and Pune and Pondicherry India.
Anupama Kundoo Architects, founded by Kundoo in 1990 seeks to design the humble backdrop to human life. Recognizing the territorial impacts of building materials as well as their fertility in terms of form and assembly, their portfolio displays a wide range from public dwellings to residential buildings followings their ethos to contextually sensitive construction.
