Taller Gabriela Carillo:
Other Eyes

Rensselaer School of Architecture kicks off its Fall 2023 Lecture Series this Wednesday September 13, 6:15pm at EMPAC with the lecture “Other Eyes” by Gabriela Carillo.

Gabriela Carrillo is a prominent Mexican architect known for her innovative and sustainable architectural designs. Born in Mexico City, she co-founded the architectural firm “Taller Mauricio Rocha + Gabriela Carrillo” (formerly Taller de Arquitectura Mauricio Rocha + Gabriela Carrillo) alongside architect Mauricio Rocha in 2000.

Carrillo’s architectural oeuvre is distinguished by her profound reverence for environmental considerations and a steadfast dedication to safeguarding Mexico’s architectural heritage. Her designs exhibit a harmonious fusion of traditional and contemporary elements, yielding spaces that are not only spatially captivating but also ecologically sustainable with a focus on contextual sensitivity.

In 2019, Gabriela Carrillo established her eponymous studio, creating a collaborative and interdisciplinary space dedicated to architectural work. She is also a co-founder of the c733 collective, which focuses on developing public projects in Mexico. Before this venture, she served as a partner at Taller Rocha Carrillo for over nine years. With more than two decades of experience in the field, Carrillo has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize in 2014, the Emerging Voices Award in 2014, the Federico Mariscal Chair (the highest recognition for professional practice by the Faculty of Architecture at UNAM), and the Médaille d’OR from the French Academy of Architecture. In 2017, she was named “Architect of the Year” by Architectural Review in London and received the same honor from Architectural Digest Mexico in 2020.

Gabriela Carrillo’s architectural philosophy is predicated upon a meticulous and contextual sensitivity, wherein she assiduously comprehends and reveres the intricate milieu within which her projects are situated. Embracing sustainability as a linchpin, Carrillo’s designs exemplify an eco-centric paradigm, emphasizing energy efficiency, locally sourced materials, and ecologically conscientious construction practices. Her architectural oeuvre harmoniously interweaves the imperative of heritage preservation, deftly fusing traditional architectural motifs and materials with a contemporary sensibility, thereby embodying a profound appreciation for cultural historiography. In the pursuit of innovation, Carrillo’s approach is characterized by audacious creative solutions that transcend established architectural paradigms, fostering a legacy of architectural pioneering.

Carrillo is a member of the National System of Art Creators and, since 2021, an academic member of the Academy of Architecture of Mexico’s Mexico City chapter. She has been an academic at the Faculty of Architecture at UNAM since 2003 and currently leads the research and graduation seminar Estudio RX. She has also shared her knowledge at esteemed institutions such as Harvard GSD, Kent State University, and the WAVE program in Venice, Italy, among others. Her architectural work has been showcased and recognized in various national and international biennials and has been featured in renowned publications including Domus, Casabella, Arquitectura Viva, and Architectural Review, among others.

We look forward to seeing you at this lecture.
