Rensselaer Architecture continues its spring 2023 lecture series on Wednesday, March 29 with a lecture by Beals Lyon Arquitectos.
ALEJANDRO BEALS (Chile, 1976) In 2001 he received the title of Architect from PUC (Chile). In 2012 he got a Master of Philosophy degree at the Royal College of Art (RCA), London, where he researched about boundaries and borders in architecture, under the supervision of professor Nigel Coates.
LORETO LYON (Chile, 1979) She got the title of Architect from PUC (Chile) in 2005. In 2011 she received a Master of Science degree (MSc) in ‘Environmental Design and Engineering’ from the Bartlett, University College of London (UCL).
After living and studying in London, in 2012 they founded the architectural studio BEALS LYON ARQUITECTOS, an independent practice distinguished by careful attention to context, materials and details. Their interests and work range from landscape and infrastructure, to interior and furniture design.
Their work includes private houses, the winning installation for the Chilean version of the YAP 2012/2013 (MoMA – PS1 Young Architects’ Program) and winning proposals for public buildings, such as a town hall in Central Chile in Nancagua, the New Library of the National Congress and a Metro Station, this last two right in Santiago’s historical centre.
They have taught together at Cornell University AAP, the IUAV in Venice, Scola da Cidade in Sao Paulo, Universidad Católica del Perú, and Universidad Católica de Chile, where they currently teach a Master’s Studio. Since 2022, Loreto is head of the School of Architecture at Universidad San Sebastián.
They have published and exhibited extensively. In 2016 Ediciones ARQ publishes the monograph “Beals Lyon Arquitectos: Public Voids”, featuring a selection of works about projects of public architecture. The practice has been recognized with various design awards, like the Archdaily’s Building of the Year and the Oscar Niemeyer Award for Latin American Architecture, both in 2020 for the project New Town hall in Nancagua.
We look forward to seeing you at this lecture.
