Marcus Carter appointed Assistant Professor
The Dean’s Office has announced the full-time tenure-track appointment of Prof. Marcus Carter, as a new Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture.
With expertise in the areas of building design, building performance, and building practice — three core instructional priorities in the School of Architecture — Prof. Carter will provide an invaluable contribution to our program committed to the study of architecture as the integration of art, science and technology.
Having worked in top-tier international firms such as Robert A.M. Stern Architects, Kohn Pedersen Fox, and more recently as a senior associate from 2007-2017 at Steven Holl Architects, Prof. Carter brings a wealth of practical experience to the school. With a history of leading award-winning projects from concept to completion, he will be an outstanding addition to our two-part comprehensive design studio sequence.
Since launching his firm OBJECT TERRITORIES in 2016, he has received international recognition for competition entries including the Nanhai Art Center Competition in Foshan, China (finalist); Uijeongbu Archaeological Museum Competition in Seoul, South Korea (finalist); Chouteau Greenway Competition in St. Louis, MO (finalist); and Da Nang City Central Square Competition in Da Nang, Vietnam (finalist).
In recognition of his firm’s design excellence he has received a number of distinguished awards including the 2018 RVF China Best Winery Architecture Award for the Ningxia Winery; 2019 Architizer A+Awards Jury Winner in the Landscape & Planning; 2019 American Institute of Architects, St. Louis Chapter Honor Award; 2019 American Society of Landscape Architects National Honor Award in Analysis and Planning; and the 2019 Global Human Settlements Award for Planning and Design from the Global Forum on Human Settlements. In 2021, he was awarded a Rensselaer Brown’s Travel & Research Faculty Fellowship.
Prof. Carter received his Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) degree from the University of Kansas in 2000 and his Master of Architecture (M.Arch II) degree from Yale University in 2004.
His essays have been included in distinguished publications such as Perspecta: The Yale Architectural Journal, The Louisiana State University Architecture Journal, and Princeton Architectural Magazine. He has taught at the Yale School of Architecture; University of Kansas; New York Institute of Technology; and Parsons School of Design. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and a registered architect in New York.
