The first lecture of the Fall’s Building Science Lecture Series themed “Generative Citizenship: Leveraging New Tools and Forms of Entrepreneurship in the City” will be held on Wednesday, September 30 from 1-2 pm. This virtual lecture will be open to the whole school and general public on Zoom. Please click on this link to join the lecture.
The first speaker for the series is Violet Whitney. Whitney is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Columbia University, where she teaches urban data analytics and tangible computing courses. She founded the Generative Design product at Sidewalk Labs where she works as a Senior Product Manager.
Cities have always been complex, but in recent years, technology has inadvertently changed the nature of that complexity. Websites like Yelp and Airbnb direct people to preferred restaurants or reprogram homes into vacation rentals, resulting in new emergent behaviors. Whitney will discuss how spatial designers should design for this new complexity created by the internet and digital technologies that shape spatial behavior. The talk will investigate the new tools of today’s designers from urban planning simulation, agent-based modeling, and prototyping with smart home products.
