Marcus Carter is an assistant professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a partner at OBJECT TERRITORIES, a critical design practice operating from Hong Kong and New York City, working at the intersection of architecture, landscape and urbanism at scales ranging from strategic interventions to architectural projects and regional master plans. Prior to founding OBJECT TERRITORIES, Marcus was a senior associate at Steven Holl Architects and designer at Kohn Pederson Fox and Robert A. M. Stern Architects. He has broad experience on projects in North America, Asia, and Europe including master plans, office & hotel towers, cultural buildings and residential projects.
Marcus currently coordinates the Comprehensive Design Studio 1 course in the core sequence in addition to teaching options studios, professional electives, and courses in construction technologies. In addition to Rensselaer, he has taught at Washington University in St. Louis, the Parsons School of Design, and New York Institute of Technology, and has been a student mentor for the Architectural League of New York and the Architecture is Free Foundation.
Marcus’ interests lie in the machinations of the contemporary urban environment as well as architecture’s catalytic potential in this climate. His work has received a National Honor Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Global Human Settlements Award for Planning and Design from the Global Forum on Human Settlements, an Architizer A+ Award, along with two Honor Awards, a Distinguished Project Award, and a Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects. With OBJECT TERRITORIES and RPI, Marcus was selected to lead one of six teams for the first round of piloting projects for the Trust for Governors Island and its Living Lab. He recently won the Browns Faculty Travel Fellowship for his proposal Skin Deep | Deep Skin to investigate advancements in the enclosure industry in Europe.
His projects have been extensively published in various venues including: A+ Architecture: The Best of Architizer, ASLA National, Oculus (AIA-NY), Global Architecture, as well as multiple monographs by Steven Holl and Robert A. M. Stern. Marcus’ work has been exhibited at the Center for Architecture + Design in San Francisco, the Center for Architecture in New York City, Yale University School of Architecture, the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, and the ECOCITY World Summit in London. He has served as an invited juror for the Municipal Art Society of New York, The World Architecture News (WAN) Professional Awards Program, and the World Landscape Architecture’s (WLA) Student Awards Program.
Marcus holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Kansas, studying in Rome during that time, and a post-professional Master of Architecture II from the Yale School of Architecture. While at Yale, he was editor of Perspecta, the Yale Architectural Journal.
Marcus is a registered architect in New York State, holds a certificate from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), and is a LEED Accredited Professional. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Society of Architectural Historians.
