“The Dream of Space Produces Forms” / ANGELA GARCIA DE PAREDES (PAREDES PEDROSA)
This lecture and accompanying exhibition are Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos respond to the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale’s theme of Freespace by focusing on the section –the architectural tool which explores the spatial form, the height and depth of the volume to be created– which in their words is “to be occupied by light, by time or by sound, key design tools in our daily practice.”
Angela Garcia de Paredes is a founding partner of the Spanish architectural firm Paredes Pedrosa, which she established in 1990 together with Ignacio Pedrosa. Their built work includes specific heritage interventions, such as La Olmeda Roman Villa, Ceuta’s Public Library and Twin Houses in Oropesa, shortlisted for this year’s Women in Architecture Architect of the Year Award. She is a professor at the Architectural Design Department in Madrid ETSAM and a visiting professor at IUAV in Venice among other universities. García de Paredes was the curator of the X Ibero American Biennale in 2016.
Paredes Pedrosa’s work has been internationally recognised and awarded with the 2015 European Award for Architectural Heritage, 2014 Spain Fine Arts Gold Medal, and 2007 Spain Architecture Award. The Town Hall in Valdemaqueda was a prizewinner in the very first edition of the AR Emerging Architecture awards in 1999, and the Congress Centre in Murcia was highly commended in 2002. Their built work after first prize competitions include: Town Hall in Valdemaqueda, Valle Inclán Theatre in Madrid, Archaeology Museum in Almeria, Peñíscola Congress Centre, Espacio Torner in Cuenca, La Olmeda Roman Villa Museum in Palencia, UPI School in Gandía, Ceuta Public Library, Lugo Auditorium and Córdoba Public Library, the latter under construction. Other first prize competitions are Borghetto Flaminio in Roma and recently the Visigoth Museum in Mérida and Jaén Justice Court.
