Generative Excavations: Contemporary Architectural Readings – Rome, 2017_
This show presents the design investigations developed by the students participating in the Generative Excavations studio, led by Lecturer Yael Erel, as part of Fall 2017 Semester-Abroad Program in Italy.
The show closes on March-29 with a Rensselaer Italian Studies Celebration.
The studio used Rome as a laboratory to unlock hidden logics imbedded in architecture. Students analyzed a square fragment of the Nolli Map with an imbedded architectural gem. Through deep observation, dissection and analysis in multiple scales they proposed a thesis revealing the logics embedded in the artifact and its zeitgeist.
Using drawings and models to uncover the spirit of the time it was written through the spirit of our time, when it is read. The ambition of this project is to turn the reading of an architectural gem into writing, taking the analysis to its next generative step. An architectural reading becomes a key to unlock a new beginning.
