This Wednesday, January 30, will be the first Brown Fellows lecture of the Spring ’19 semester. It will be presented in the Greene Gallery, 2nd floor, and starts at 6PM. The Brown Fellowship is a traveling grant available to students and faculty at various stages in their careers. After the lecture the Fellowship application will be explained in greater depth.

Dr. Ning Xiang will present a lecture entitled, “Sound Diffractions in Performance Halls.”

Prof. Carla Leitao will present a lecture entitled “Book | Human | Space”


Carla Leitao is an architect, designer and writer based in New York and is co-founder of Umasideia in Lisbon, and AUM Studio in NY, with Ed Keller. A professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s School of Architecture, her practice, research and academic endeavors focus on the intersection between architecture materials and practices, and media concepts and processes. Her design work includes built and ongoing residential and institutional projects and multimedia exhibitions.Publications include several authorships and editing projects involving relationships between technology, representation and architectural/urban systems.

Dr. Ning Xiang is Director of the Graduate Program in Architectural Acoustics, and since 2003 has been with Rensselaer’s School of Architecture. Dr. Xiang has published 3 books and over 350 papers in proceedings and peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Xiang is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), a Fellow of the Institute of Acoustics (United Kingdom), and a Member of the German Acoustical Society since 1991. He is a Member of the Audio Engineering Society, and a Member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering, USA. Dr. Xiang is currently an Associate Editor of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA). In the Acoustical Society of America, he served as the Chair of the Technical Committee on Signal Processing in Acoustics 2012-2015. He is the (2014) recipient of Wallace Sabine Medal from the Acoustical Society of America. He was awarded (Feb. 2018) the Lifetime Achievement Award 2018, from Marquis Who’s Who.
