JIM COLLINS: “THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE IN AN ERA OF RESISTANCE”
JAMES (JIM) COLLINS Jr. FAIA, principal at Payette Associates, is a renowned architect and graduate of the Rensselaer School of Architecture. Deeply invested in the spatial and environmental manifestation of scientific inquiry, Collins has applied the best principles in laboratory and campus planning to create responsive centers of learning and experimentation throughout the country.
Collins holds three degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He graduated in 1978 with a Bachelors of Science in Building Science, a Bachelor of Architecture, and a Master of Business Administration. Since joining Payette in 1979, Collins has elevated the role of science in ways that reconnect and repair campus fabric, as evidenced by a prestigious body of projects that make science more visible and accessible. His leadership in adapting the organizational concepts of campus and laboratory planning to the way scientific advancement principles have changed has set new standards in both architectural practice and research settings.
As President of the firm (1998-2013), Collins defined Payette’s exemplary model of practice, which balances technical pragmatism with creative design vision. Collins brought increased focus to the firm’s design and sustainable initiatives. His body of work is singularly focused on the advancement of the architectural profession as a vital partner in defining new ways to support scientific advancement. Collins was elevated to FAIA in 2009 in recognition of his achievements in design.
