[Positions Series] Constructing Audiences
DISCUSSION: Saturday, October 4th, Greene Gallery, 1:30pm
“CONSTRUCTING AUDIENCES”
“Constructing Audiences,” as the next topic of discussion in the Rensselaer Positions Series, will examine pertinent ways in which architects engage people of today. Under varying circumstances and at divergent scales, from that of buildings to curated exhibitions, installations, and writings, architects are experts in the making of audiences. One could argue that the architect is not so much interested in buildings per se, but rather in the effects, atmospheres, conditions, and audiences that buildings generate, which then ultimately produces a chain of reactions or affects, from the anticipated to the unexpected. Students Miguel Lantigua-Iona (B.Arch) and Elias Jackson Darham (M.Arch I) will begin the discussion by presenting their positions on this topic.
Architectural designer Gia Wolff will be our guest speaker for the upcoming “Constructing Audiences” discussion. As a designer, teacher, and researcher whose work investigates performative architecture, temporary spaces, and speculative artworks, Wolff is strongly compelled by architecture that inspires in her audience an active questioning of time and scale.
Participants and observers of the discussion are encouraged to read and consider the following questions in preparation for “Constructing Audiences.”
How do architects, curators, and historians construct and engage people in new and instrumental ways as a means to advance the field and engage culture? What are the imperatives of constructing audiences and its role in how said intellectuals establish their positions on matters regarding the field and their respective practices?
We look forward to a lively discussion.
