Prompted by Felix Guattar’s book, The Three Ecologies, we began the semester by imaging the implications of a social, environmental and mental ecology for the discipline of architecture. As a means of exploring these questions, students were presented with the challenge of re-imagining the Approach; as place that could serve as a 21st century hinge between the campus of Rensselaer and the larger city of Troy.
For our purposes we chose to define the three ecologies as follows: Mental (Architectonic Invention), Environmental (Site) and Societal (Program).
The semester was divided into three successive projects, each building upon the previous one in a strategic manner. Project one was devoted to the exploration and transformation of an existing set of traditional Japanese joints. Project two dealt with the formation of a new set of architectonic element: in the form of walls, columns, beams, roof & ground planes as well as stairs. In project we introduced the grand stair of The Approach as a site to receive thirteen radical pavilions. Through a series of investigations and interventions, students were required to propose both individual and collective strategies of engagement. Each pavilion was internally motivated, yet responsive to neighboring interventions; the collection of interventions acted as a new type of micro-urbanism.
