Studio Premises:
– Could an architectural approach to systems design create a catalytic series of relationships among natural resources and industrial production?
– To what extent can a ‘constructed ecology’ harness or facilitate manifold processes of energy production & consumption?
– What forms of new, hybrid ‘infra-structure’ can be produced by considering the built environment on a more ecological basis?
– How can generative & parametric design logics be deployed to explore and develop the foregoing design relationships?
The studio took a three-stage approach toward generating a prototype for hybrid industrial / agricultural infrastructure in the former Rensselaer Iron Works industrial site in South Troy’s industrial zone. The first stage (in small teams) researched & catalogued botanical precedents, agricultural production, EES / building systems technologies, and emerging ‘green technologies’ for energy production & storage. A second stage (individual projects) selectively applied research, creating structural + environmental ‘systems prototypes’ that were tested for application to site conditions. Individual final projects proposed unique industrial / agricultural program as part of mixed-use redevelopment in the partially languishing South Troy industrial district.
Design research focused upon developing a ‘productive infrastructural substrate’ that modulated environmental resources and industrial / agricultural program. Design methodologies simultaneously explore potentially unique combinations of parametric geometries, structural systems, and ‘green’ systems technologies that can take advantage of site resources while proposing new forms of activity for the existing waterfront industrial zone.
