The studio asked students to address the relationship between earth and sky in two projects. The first project had as its primary focus the earth and the second project principally focused on the sky. In each case, sky and earth respectively acted as a foil to the primary focus.
The first project entailed a six-week competition to design a building complex that included four interrelated programs for an artists colony situated on the site of an abandoned granite quarry in Barre, Vermont. The program included artists studios and residences, and educational pavilion, and a memorial dedicated to the workers of the quarry.
The second project involved the design of a facility for the Dudley Observatory, a privately endowed institution dedicated to supporting research and education in astronomy and its history. The program included exhibition spaces, a lecture hall, media center, offices, and planetarium. It also included three observatories, one of which housed the historic Pruyn telescope, an artifact of nineteenth-century technology. The site for this project was Thacher Park situated on the Helderberg Escarpment overlooking the Hudson River Valley.
