ARCH 2200 is the first semester of the four semester long sequence of core design studios within the School of Architecture at Rensselaer. In this semester one will engage in fundamental design principles of the discipline of architecture, focusing upon the conceptualization and realization of an architectural work. Problems are framed in such a manner, that students may understand how a work of architecture moves through successive stages of development. As part of this developmental process, students are challenged to engage fundamental questions of two and three-dimensional representation as well as utilizing language as a key form of communication. Through a rigorous and challenging set of problems students will become aware of the parallel necessity of technical mastery and conceptual clarity. The lessons obtained in this first semester are meant to give students the foundation upon which to build the nine semesters of successive study within the design sequence.
