How do we teach new architecture students to achieve the synthesis of conceptual strength, realizable form, and compelling expression? My intention as a design instructor is to guide students in their definition and elaboration of clear theoretical underpinnings that can reinforce and organize their creative intuitions, negotiating a balance between intellectual control and the revelation of the unexpected.
One way I have developed along these lines is an exercise in de-familiarization. The departure point is usually a two dimensional image – an architectural site – from which students produce a series of experimental drawings re-interpreting its latent forces into three dimensions. Drawing is introduced to the students as a tool for formal and conceptual exploration. The ability to turn unconscious intuitions into clearly communicated ideas is a fascinating process that I consider fundamental for any future artist.
The goal is to cultivate in the students an ongoing freshness of perception, which results not only in thrilling forms but also in excitement in the process of discovery.
