EXPANDING THE GRID

JOEL RIOS

With the growing population in Mexico City, Slums have begun to develop with in ecological reserves that surround the capital. The ecological reserves are the crucial water filtration system that provides for the depleting Mexico City Aquifer, making it more important to protect them since only 4% of rain water is eventually drained into the Aquifer. The Urban Expansion also causes more misuse and over pumping of the water supply, resulting in higher cost for lower quality water in slums. With the rain season being almost 6 months long, water control must be maximized to begin to offset the urban growth.

Through creating a new city grid with urban pockets for farming and reservoirs and a hydrological based roof scape; this new slum morphology seeks to maximize rain water collection and distribution, while creating a new elevated urban landscape.
