Doctor of Philosophy, Ruhr-University Bochum; Bachelor of Science, Tianjin University (China)

Dr. Ning Xiang earned his BS in Electrical Engineering in 1982 from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tianjin University, China, Ph.D. in 1990 from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB) Germany (with advisor Prof. Dr. Jens P. Blauert). Dr. Xiang was then working as a project manager and R&D Engineer for HEAD acoustics Inc. Germany from 1991-1996 and subsequently joined the Fraunhofer-Institute for Building Physics, Stuttgart, Germany, as a Research Scientist in 1997. Between 1998-2003, he had been with the National Center for Physical Acoustics and a Research Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at University of Mississippi. He joined the School of Architecture at Rensselaer in July 2003, and now is a full professor. For over 35 years, Dr. Xiang has produced over 430 publications in peer-reviewed journals (including J. of the Acoustical Society of America, IEEE, Applied Acoustics, and acta acustica), proceedings, books and book chapters in such diverse fields as Ultrasonic measurement technology, Bayesian Inference, acoustic approach to landmine detection, model-based data analysis, automatic target recognition, architectural acoustics, binaural auralization, binaural signal processing, and auditory virtual reality. Recently, he co-authored with Prof. J. Blauert a Springer book “Acoustics for Engineers’ (3rd Ed. 2021). He also edited two volumes Architectural Acoustics Handbook (J. Ross Publishing 2017) and Acoustics, Information, and Communication – Memorial Volume in Honor of Manfred Schroeder Springer 2015.  He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), a former Fellow of the Institute of Acoustics (IoA, United Kingdom) and a Member of German Acoustical Society, a Member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the Institute of Noise Control Engineering, USA. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA). International leaderships Dr. Xiang has been playing include the Advisory Board Member of the International Symposium on RoomAcoustics 2007 Silvia, Spain, Organization Board Member of the International Workshop on Bayesian Inference and Maximum Entropy Methods in Science and Engineering, 2007, Saratoga, New York, Advisory Board Member of the International Conference on Noise Control Engineering, 2008 Shanghai, China, Advisory Board Member of the International Symposium on RoomAcoustics, 2010 Melbourne, Australia, and of the Acoustics Conference, Hong Kong 2012. In the ASA, Dr. Xiang has been an active member, playing many leaderships role, including coordinating editor for JASA, Past Chair of the Technical Committee on Signal Progressing in Acoustics, the current Chair of the ASA Press Book Committee of the ASA for Springer-Nature books. In 2014, he received Wallace Clement Sabine Medal from the Acoustical Society of America. In Feb. 2018 he is awarded the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who’s Who.
