Gustavo Crembil is an Argentinean architect whose practice draws from architectural design, craft, performance, and social activism. A former Fulbright scholar, his research and teaching have been supported by prestigious institutions, including the UNESCO-Aschberg Program, Fondo Nacional de las Artes, and Fundación Antorchas in Argentina, as well as the Rotch Traveling Studio Grant, the Jaffe Fund / EMPAC at RPI, and the Brown Traveling Fellowship (SoA RPI).
Crembil’s artist-in-residence appointments include UCLA’s Hypermedia Studio, the European Ceramic Work Centre, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and the Creative Glass Center of America (Wheaton Arts, NJ). His individual and collaborative works have been exhibited internationally at venues such as the Museum of Modern Art (2004, New York), Dutch Design Week (2009, Eindhoven), PS1 MoMA (2019, NYC), ACADIA (2011, Calgary), RE-New Festival (2013, Copenhagen), Transitio_MX (2013, Mexico), Disruption / ISEA (2015, Vancouver), Bienal Sur (2017, Buenos Aires), Studio X / Istanbul Design Biennial (2018), Luma Arles (2019, Arles), and the Sonsbeek 20->24 Quadrennial (2021, Arnhem).
He was a founding partner of THEM: Lynch + Crembil, a practice recognized as an emergent architectural voice by the Museum of Modern Art and by ACSA/JAE for their ‘design as scholarship’ work. His current research interests include contemporary craft, informal urbanism, and ‘mestizo’ technologies — which explore the fusion of traditional and modern techniques.
Before joining RPI, Crembil taught at the University of Detroit-Mercy, Universidad Blas Pascal (Argentina), and served as a guest Architect-in-Residence at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Crembil is currently an Associate Professor at Rensselaer School of Architecture, where he teaches undergraduate design studios and seminars. From 2008 to 2012, he directed the school’s China Semester-Abroad Program based at Tongji University in Shanghai. Since 2016, he has initiated and directed the Latin America Program, connecting with several institutions in the Southern Cone. Additionally, he serves as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education at the institute level.
